How A Prophetic Hadith Shaped My Academic And Spiritual Journey At Preston

“Take benefit of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your busyness, and your life before your death” (Sahih al-Jami’, 1077),

This hadith is a powerful reminder of the temporary blessings we often take for granted. This hadith has served as a guiding principle in my journey at Preston

Islamic Inspiration Behind My Academic Journey

When I reflect on my time at Preston, I realize that my studies were not just about academic growth, but a transformation that touched both my spiritual life and career path. The structured learning environment helped me discipline my time and focus, aligning well with the Prophet’s advice to make the most of free time and youth before they are lost. The atmosphere of sincere scholarship and encouragement allowed me to use my health, youth, and time in a way that was spiritually fulfilling and purpose-driven.

Strengthening My Spiritual Identity

Spiritually, my studies opened my heart to deeper understanding of the Qur’an, Hadith, and Arabic language. They helped me become more conscious of my purpose as a Muslim — not just to live, but to live meaningfully and in service to Allah. I learned to value sincerity, patience, and tawakkul (trust in Allah), which became central in my day-to-day decisions and worship.

From Secular Ambitions to Islamic Purpose

Career-wise, Preston was a turning point. The knowledge and training I received gave me the confidence to pursue a path in teaching Arabic and Islamic studies, which I now consider not just a profession but an act of ‘ibadah (worship). This shift from a worldly-focused career to one rooted in da’wah and ilm is a direct result of internalizing this hadith: I realized that true success lies in using our blessings to benefit others for the sake of Allah.

Living the Hadith Daily

The Prophet’s metaphor, explained by Al-Teebi — that the believer is like a merchant using his capital wisely — resonates with me deeply. My health and time were my capital, and through Preston, I learned to invest them in learning, self-development, and serving the ummah. I now strive to protect this “capital” by avoiding spiritual laziness, worldly distractions, and wasted time.

A Lasting Legacy of Knowledge and Faith

This hadith not only shaped my mindset during my studies but continues to influence my choices today. It reminds me to stay committed, grateful, and goal-oriented — not just for success in this world, but for the reward in the Hereafter.
